VIDEO PRE-PRODUCTION

Let’s get into it, shall we? Before we touch a camera, there are lots of things we need to do. Pre-production is a hugely important step. It’s where your video is actually created. The first step is meeting with our client. In this meeting, we’re looking to understand what it is that makes you unique and what you want to communicate. You may come to us with a fully-formed idea, or you might have no idea what your first step should be. Those are both great! Whether it’s bringing your idea to life, or working with you to come up with a brilliant video, this is the part we really excel at.

Once we’ve understood you and your vision, we put our brains to work. We usually will come up with a variety of concepts, and then we’ll narrow it down to create something concise and creative. Here’s how that usually goes:

“Okay, here’s this cool new tech product. It’s a drone that picks up dog poop.”
“What if ALIENS came and abducted the spokesman?”

“Awesome!”

“Yeah, but that would probably be pretty expensive.”

“Good point. We’ll save that idea for after their second round of funding.”

“So what if instead, we start with a man who talks about how he’s sure glad he doesn’t have to squish poop between his fingers anymore? Then we see the drone in action.”

“Awesome. Simple, funny, and to the point.”

So then we’ll draft the concept (or concepts) in treatment form and present it to you. You might have some feedback or some suggestions, and we’re happy to work with you. Then, all we need is a green light and we’re ready to go!

And by ready to go, I mean we’re ready to continue pre-production. The next step is to write out a script. This is where the concept comes to life, complete with clear language and funny jokes. We then take the script and storyboard it, which means literally drawing out what each shot will look like and what will be happening throughout the video. After we’ve done this, we’ll talk to you about it and we’ll all get excited about your video.

Once the script is written and storyboarded, we identify what props are needed (fake dog poop, etc.), what locations we’ll need to find (location scouting cannot be skipped), how our set will look and feel (usually BRIGHT and COLORFUL!), and who our cast will be. We have some great talented actors in the area who can help bring your video to work. We’ll send out a casting call, hold auditions, and find that perfect spokesperson for your company or product.

Pre-production is crucial. It’s what separates the pros from the amateurs. We look forward to making something awesome with you.
